Janus University Theather

Picnic in Pécs
International university theather meeting

János Mikuli director, leader of the university theather of Pécs, organizer of the festivals decided that this year he will renovate the meeting of the university actors, and raise the level with inviting some foreign teams.

I don't know much about the previous festivals in Pécs, but about this year's festival I can declare, that it was successful and high-leveled. Only a little doubt remained in me, if it is correct to let students from the theatrical collage compete with the future's teachers, economists and doctors. It is no question who will be the winner. But I'm sure, the prospective teachers, economists and doctors don't play for the awards.
The festival was opened with Janus University's performance Mourning heart. The performance was assambled from the texts of Tristan Tzara and Miklós Szentkuthy and directed by András Ernő Tóth. The production of the team of about thirty people was disciplined harmony of gestures, sound and movement. In many scenes the mechanic repeating of movement and acoustic elements brought the actstyle of the previous decades to my mind, although sometimes I couldn't see the deep of these technics. The other part of the performance was the series of the comical prosaic scenes.
The following performance was the production of the Film and Theatrical Collage, John Pielmeir: Ágnes. Three main female characters. Judicial psychologist. Strangled baby found in dustbin. Mother charged with murder. Psychothriller with little movement. Actresses with the talent of characterforming.
The Scene House from Szeged performed Closer of Patrik Marber. The performance was English and was intended for adults. Although the audience could not see any indecent word, any nacked part of the body. Not the sight, but the words were age limited. This obscene text was fast and shallow, but painful and sad. This was a painful performance.
The macedons couldn't arrive from Skopje, so instead of them three young actors, 2 boys and one girl standed on stage. (Hidden Theather, Serbia, Vajdaság) They tried to perform. Shouted and cried on the stage, the boys jumped into each other's lap. Their murdering glance cited the war. The girl shaved her leg. The boys brought beer and poured it on thier head. Hairwashing with beer and shampoo. Then the girl cut off a boy's hair and tried to shave it bold. Sámson and Delila. The audience gave them laugh and applause.
We could see Osztrovszkij's Poor brideperformed by the theatrical academic from Pozsony directed by József Czajlik. This performance was shocking with brilliant actresses. All roles were acted by six girls. The story of Osztrovszkij revived in one room, that was changed by the rules of the play. The play exaggerated the illusion of love and did not covered, rather strengthened the existance of the theather. The illusion became a dream, to be more precise, the worl was built up, where we belived the theather to be truth. So we could accept the male roles played by girls. The theather from Pozsony worked a  lot with the performance, six hours a day for three  months. It was no surprise, that this production got most of the acceptation (Main award, director award, actor's awards).
The Calipsis University Stage came from Debrecen. Their performance was the Nine little Black, as authora Aghata Christie, Martin Heidegger and Csaba Tóth was represented. The director was Csaba Tóth. For me the performance was the most unsuccessful production of the festival. All killed characters appeared on the stage again, but the still living characters couldn't see them, only the audience. It was ridioulous and foolish.
The "Maszkura", the Hungarian theather team of the Culturehouse of the University Students of Kolozsvár. They performed Razvan Petrescu's Joke, directed by Tibor Csergő and István Kovács. The members of the jury - Tibor Solténszky dramaturg, István Pinczés director and Tamás Balikó  theatherleader appreciated the acting of the students. The text was said to bee too outworn and dusty, the actualization of the story of Káin and Ábel too enlargened.
The "Magma", Romanian theather team of the Culurehouse of the University Students of Kolozsvár performed Picnic on the battlefield of Arrabal. The director of the production, Radu Trucelescu has been the leader of the team since last year's autumn. This was the first time, that the Magma was taking part in international festival, and it was prize-winning.
The performance, that was finishing the festival was also the perfromance of the Janus University Theather. We could see László Darvasi's Crazy Helga. The story took place in Germany in the previous century. A little town is shocked by crime: the family Koch was cruelly killed. On that night Helga, the foster-child of Koch was in the house with a stranger, who had asked for shelter from the storm. Helga and the stranger are under the suspicion of murdering, but the mayor is in love with Helga and tries to smooth away the case. The relationship between the citizens is strange, maybe everybody is guilty. This is a good performance, well-directed by János Mikuli. I was telling myself during the applause: Good, good, very good! Award for the dramaturg.

This was the university students' meeting for me in a beautyful city.
