The story of the Janus University Theather

The Janus University Theather was founded in 1996. Pécs has always had great traditions of university theatrical art, but mostly they got place in the community arts centres of the city, and their existance were often endangered by the reorganizations of the estabilishments.(The Örkény trilogy of the Opened Stage of the Collage of Education got a nationwide professional response in the '80-es and in the '90-es the University Stage from the Little Theather of Pécs made the prformance with a great success.)  But the reorganizations of the estabilishments and the budget deficits ousted the university playing from the city's arts centres.
János Mikuli  and András Ernő Tóth took an initiative, supported by many university officials and theachers, so the engagement, that is the base of the functioning was concluded. Beside university supporting the existence of the performances was helped by the application activity of the Alternative Theather Workshop Fundation.
The theather spent it's firt year in the Third Theather of Pécs. There has been the platform created, that has been determining the activity of the JESZ up to now.
1.  The own premiéres of the Janus University Theather (professional and experimental performances, with professional and alternative actors)
2.  The performances of the University Stage (amateur-university performances connacted with the training)
3.  Recieved theatrical performances (best performances of the national alternative and experimental theathers)
4.  Drama "C" subject training - practice (The Department of Modern History of Literature and Theoretical Literature of Faculty of Arts of the University of Pécs)
In the autumn of 1997 the management of the University of Pécs provided some place for the Janus University Theather in the building of the university. Directors, actors and university students created with hard work the theather hall, the offices, the foyer, the storeroom, the cloakroom. The theather opened on 11th November 1997. Since then the intensive work has been going on. The group of the university actors was born and has became more and more skilled, but older alternative actors and professionals are also the members of the company. The Janus University Theather has always been working with more directors. (János Mikuli, András Ernő Tóth, Attila Szabó) Maybe this made that possible for the theather to keep on being opened, be able to speak more theatrical languages and work continuously. The Janus University Theather has been taking part in the most important national festivals, it's performances has won many awards since 1997. Since 1999 it has been representing hungarian university playing on foreign festivals. The National University and Collage Theather Festival is organized by the Janus University Theather. In the spring of 2000 the JESZ’s hall’s main joist cracked, and thus the hall became unsuitable for wok, so the JESZ resided at the National Theatre of Pécs from 2000 to 2002, the shows were performed there as well. The new place (Szántó Kovács János street 1.) was finished in early february 2003, which was redone in 2008. Generations came and went, but the quality of the work remained constantly high. (In 2006, the JESZ received the „for the PTE University Culture” award) Its connections spread, the festival became international. In the fall of 2011, the 15 year old JESZ was able to seize professional studio theatre halls at the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter.
